Our short guide Covering the process, from start to finish.
Read Time: 4 Minutes
We understand that undergoing any medical procedure can be a source of anxiety, especially if you’re unsure about what to expect.
This guide is designed to provide you with all the information you need to feel comfortable and prepared for your upcoming procedure.
For those who prefer just the essential information, we’ve kept the explanations straightforward and easy to follow. If you’re curious about the more specific details of the procedure, we’ve included an expandable section that you can choose to read or skip.
We want you to feel informed, at ease, and confident every step of the way.
Before The Day
The first step is to book your vasectomy procedure appointment.
No consultation is needed, simply use the clinic availability calendar via the button below to book directly in.
If you do have any questions before booking, feel free to get in touch.
In preparation for your procedure, we ask that you follow a few simple steps:
Hygiene: Please wash the scrotum and groin area the night before or the day of your vasectomy.
Diet: Eat as per normal on the day of your procedure – no need to fast.
Rest and Relaxation: We recommend a good night’s sleep and avoiding alcohol. If you want to bring headphones and listen to music or a podcast to distract yourself, go for it!
If you are nervous and wish to take a mild sedative to relax, we can arrange this.
On The Day
We look forward to seeing you at your scheduled time. We have plenty of free parking available at The Morehampton Clinic for your convenience.
When you arrive, either Nurse Aveen or Dr. Keane will greet you. We’ll go over the consent form together, answering any questions you might have.
To prepare for the procedure, you’ll simply remove your trousers and shoes, then lie comfortably on the bed. We’ll walk you through each step as we go, making sure you’re at ease and confident.
The Procedure
Some patients want to know all the details, while others don’t. A basic summary follows. For those who wish to read more in-depth details, you can expand the section below.
Summary: The entire process takes less than 15 minutes and involves only minimal discomfort. Very effective anaesthetic spray numbs the area involved straight away. There are no needles, no scalpels and no stitches involved at any stage.
1. Numbing the Area: The process begins with cleaning the area with an antiseptic agent, which won’t sting. We then use a Madajet, a special handheld device that sprays a numbing agent onto the target area in less than a second. This spray feels like a quick, mild flick—very fast and barely noticeable.
2. Creating a Tiny Opening: Once the area is fully numb, we make a small opening in the skin using a gentle heat device. You won’t feel a thing during this step.
3. Working on the Tube: Through this tiny opening, we carefully access the tube we need to work on. We use the heat device to separate the tube, block both ends, and hide one end beneath a layer of tissue, securing it with a small clip. The clip is entirely safe, won’t cause discomfort, and will not trigger metal detectors.
4. Repeating for the Other Side: We repeat the same process for the other tube on the opposite side, all through the same tiny opening.
5. Closing the Opening: Finally, we close the small opening by bringing the edges together and applying a little heat—no stitches are needed, and you won’t feel this step either.
That’s it! The procedure is complete. A small bandage will be applied, and you’ll be ready to head out.
Aftercare
Before you leave, we’ll go over some simple aftercare tips:
Pain Management: You are unlikely to have any pain, but any mild discomfort can usually be managed with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Hygiene: You can shower the day after the procedure but avoid soaking in baths or hot tubs for about a week.
Avoid Physical Activity: Refrain from exercise, heavy lifting, or activities that could strain the area, for about a week.
Supportive Underwear: Wearing snug, supportive underwear can help reduce discomfort and protect the area during recovery.
Follow-Up
You will just need to perform a test of success 12 weeks later, which can be done from home. This is to ensure that no sperm are present in your semen.
We’re here to support you through the entire process, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns during your recovery.
